چکیده

(i) understand the magnitudes and variability of the optical properties of the ocean; (ii) predict the inherent and apparent optical properties of the ocean, including remote-sensing reflectance, given the types and concentration of suspended particles; (iii) retrieve the inherent optical properties and concentration of optically significant constituents of sea water from reflectance measurements.

Modeling the optical properties of mineral particles suspended in seawater and their influence on ocean reflectance and chlorophyll estimation from remote sensing algorithms.

The optical properties of mineral particles suspended in seawater were calculated from the Mie scattering theory for different size distributions and complex refractive indices of the particles. The ratio of the spectral backscattering coefficient to the sum of the spectral absorption and backscattering coefficients of seawater, b(b)(lambda)/[a(lambda) + b(b)(lambda)], was analyzed as a proxy f...

Variability in measured and modelled remote sensing reflectance for coastal waters at LEO - 15

A large database of in SiLU bio-optical measurements were collected at the LEO-IS (Long-tcrm Ecosystem Observatory) off the southern coast of New Jersey, USA. The data were used to quantify the impact of coastal upwelling on near-shore bulk apparent (AOP) and inherent (lOP) optical properties, There was good qualitative agrecment between the AOPs and lOPs in space and time. The measured lOPs we...

Case 2 Antarctic Coastal Waters: the Bio-optical Properties of Surface Meltwater

In the Antarctic region, melting of sea ice and continental glaciers can create a surface lens of meltwater in coastal waters. When ice melts, particles concentrated within the ice are released into the water and can cause turbidity. Under these conditions, the optical properties of the water column are no longer related primarily to the phytoplankton and associated breakdown products (i.e., Ca...

Future Retrievals of Water Column Bio-Optical Properties using the Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI)

Interpretation of remote sensing reflectance from coastal waters at different wavelengths of light yields valuable information about water column constituents, which in turn, gives information on a variety of processes occurring in coastal waters, such as primary production, biogeochemical cycles, sediment transport, coastal erosion, and harmful algal blooms. The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (...

Model for the interpretation of hyperspectral remote-sensing reflectance.

Remote-sensing reflectance is easier to interpret for the open ocean than for coastal regions because the optical signals are highly coupled to the phytoplankton (e.g., chlorophyll) concentrations. For estuarine or coastal waters, variable terrigenous colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), suspended sediments, and bottom reflectance, all factors that do not covary with the pigment concentrati...
